Last year Korean firms won projects worth $25 billion in the UAE, mainly in the oil and gas, petrochemicals and construction sectors. The most important contract was the Korean Government-owned Kepco winning the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation. The government plans to spend close to USD$20 billion on new roads and transport infrastructure over the next five years, and a $36 billion metro system is in the pipeline over the longer term. Qatar is also building an $11 billion airport and a $5.5 billion deepwater seaport, according to Standard Chartered Bank. Qatar’s successful bid to host the 2022 soccer World Cup will speed up its construction programme and boost property prices, with contractors expected to flock to the Gulf state to snap up projects worth billions of dollars, according to Trade Arabia News Service. Proleads Global, a UAE-based market research company has reported that nearly 1,300 projects valued at more than USD$418 billion (NZD$536 billion) are under construction in the UAE, with an additional 303 projects worth $143 billion in the design, planning or bidding stage.
