The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has increased its global profit forecast for aviation for 2011 with much of the market share taken up by Asia-Pacific carriers while freight prospects appear uncertain this year and next, according to the Shipping Gazette. The US Justice Department said Singapore Airlines Cargo Pte Ltd engaged in a conspiracy to fix prices with a one-count felony charge filed in federal court accusing the company of helping to fix prices between 2002 and 2006.
Air freight rates from Asia to Europe continue to decline as a weakening euro and doubts over economic growth create uncertainty among retailers, according to International Freight Weekly (IFW). The Association of Asia Pacific Airlines says passenger and cargo traffic volumes are close to returning to levels last achieved before the recession began to hit hard in mid-2008. Careful management of capacity has also helped improve airline assets.
